Privacy Policy
Last updated: February 2026
1. Introduction
Ghost Reader (“we,” “our,” or “the app”) is a privacy-focused e-book reader developed by Osprey Applications LLC. Ghost Reader is available on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Android. This privacy policy explains how the app handles your information.
We built Ghost Reader with privacy as a core principle. The app is designed to function entirely on your device without collecting, transmitting, or storing your personal data on external servers.
2. Information We Do Not Collect
Ghost Reader does not collect, store, or transmit any of the following:
- Personal identification information (name, email, phone number)
- Account credentials or login information
- Location data
- Device identifiers or advertising IDs
- Usage analytics or behavioral tracking data
- Reading habits, preferences, or history to external servers
- Contacts, photos, or other device data unrelated to e-book reading
3. Data Stored on Your Device
Ghost Reader stores the following data locally on your device only. This data never leaves your device and is not accessible to us or any third party:
- Books: E-book files (EPUB and PDF) that you import or download through the app
- Reading Progress: Your current position in each book
- Highlights: Text passages you choose to highlight
- Annotations: Notes you add to your books
- Bookmarks: Pages or positions you bookmark for quick access
- Preferences: Your app settings such as font size, theme, and reading mode
4. iCloud Sync (Apple Devices)
On iPhone, iPad, and Mac, Ghost Reader uses Apple's iCloud service to sync your library, reading progress, bookmarks, highlights, and annotations across your Apple devices. This sync is managed entirely by Apple through their CloudKit framework.
- iCloud data is tied to your personal Apple ID, not to any account with us
- We do not operate any servers that receive, store, or process your synced data
- We cannot access, view, or retrieve any data stored in your iCloud account
- You can disable iCloud sync at any time in your device's Settings
For more information about how Apple handles iCloud data, see Apple's Privacy Policy.
5. Internet Permissions
Ghost Reader requests internet permission solely for the Book Store feature, which allows you to browse and download free e-books from public catalogs. Internet access is used only for:
- Searching and browsing book catalogs (Project Gutenberg, Google Books, Open Library)
- Downloading e-book files you select
No personal data, reading habits, or device information is transmitted during these connections. The app functions fully offline for reading books already in your library.
6. Third-Party Services
Ghost Reader interacts with the following third-party services:
- Apple App Store: The iOS, iPad, and Mac versions are distributed through the Apple App Store. Apple's Privacy Policy
- Google Play Store: The Android version is distributed through Google Play. Google's Privacy Policy
- Apple iCloud (CloudKit): Used on Apple devices to sync your library data across your devices. Managed entirely by Apple; we have no access to this data.
- Gutendex API (Project Gutenberg): Used to search and browse free public-domain e-books. Only search queries are transmitted; no personal data is sent.
- Google Books API: Used to search book catalogs. Only search queries are transmitted; no personal data is sent.
- Open Library API: Used to search and browse free e-books. Only search queries are transmitted; no personal data is sent.
We do not integrate any analytics, advertising, or crash-reporting SDKs in Ghost Reader.
7. Children's Privacy
Ghost Reader does not knowingly collect any personal information from anyone, including children under the age of 13. Since the app does not collect personal data from any user, it complies with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and similar regulations.
8. Data Security
Since all your data is stored locally on your device (and optionally in your personal iCloud account on Apple devices), its security is managed by your device's own security mechanisms (screen lock, encryption, etc.). We recommend keeping your device's operating system and security features up to date.
9. Your Rights
Because all data is stored locally on your device, you have full control over it at all times:
- Access: All your data is visible within the app
- Delete: You can delete individual books, highlights, annotations, and bookmarks within the app
- Complete Removal: Uninstalling the app removes all associated data from your device
- iCloud Data:On Apple devices, you can manage or delete iCloud data through Settings > Apple Account > iCloud
10. Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected on this page with an updated revision date. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
